Breadcrumb

Born in a simpler time  ·  Died October 2026

It is with heavy hearts (and a surprisingly light AWS bill) that we announce Breadcrumb has been sunset. It passed peacefully, mid-scavenger-hunt, surrounded by its logs.

✦

Breadcrumb spent its life hosting scavenger hunts all over the globe, though mostly in America, where it sent thousands of teams running through cities, photographing statues, and arguing about whether that counted as "a selfie with a stranger."

It was a good app. A little slow at times, occasionally convinced a team was standing in the ocean, but it always tried its best. It handed out clues, accepted questionable photo submissions, and never once asked for a raise.

It is survived by its exported data, several JSON files of questionable formatting, a lot of blurry team photos, and a successor that does everything it did, only faster and with fewer 500s.

In lieu of flowers

The family asks that you please update your bookmarks, delete any shortcuts, and stop pinging the health endpoint. It can't hear you anymore. If you are currently standing in a parking lot waiting for a clue, you can go home. The hunt is over.
